Artesunate is used to treat severe malaria in adults and children. Artesunate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication...

How It Works

Deep IM injection or slow IV infusion.Dissolve 60 mg of Artesunate with 1 ml of 5% sodium bicarbonate solution for IM injection before use. Dissolve 60 mg of Artesunate with 1 ml of 5% sodium bicarbonate solution for IV infusion and add 5 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution for injection before use to make 1 mlcontaining 10 mg of Artesunate. Injection must follow immediately soon after dissolution, if the solution appears cloudy or sediment occurs, it should be rejected.

How to Take It

Adult · IM
2.4 mg/kg — As recommended.
Severe malaria: This dose is followed by 1.2mg/Kg at 12 and 24 hours then 1.2mg/Kg daily for 6 days. If the patient can swallow, the daily dose can be given orally.

Adult · IV
2.4 mg/kg — As recommended.
Severe malaria: This dose is followed by 1.2mg/Kg daily until the patient can take orally artesunate or another effective antimalarial drug.

Adult · PO
4 mg/kg — As recommended.
Monotherapy: 4mg/Kg loading dose on the first day followed by 2mg/Kg once a day for 6 days.

Safety Alerts

Family history of suddendeath, electrolyte disturbances, concomitant use with other drugs known to cause QT-interval prolongation

Important Warnings

Congestive heart failure accompanied by reduced ventricular ejection fraction, history of arrhythmias, bradycardia, history of congenital QT interval prolongation
