What is CHLORAMPHENICOL?

Uses
It is used to treat bacterial infections.

How It Works

IV: Infuse via direct IV over 3-5 min; intermittent infusion over 30-60 min. IM: Do not administer IM.

How to Take It

Adult · Ophthalmic
0.5 %w/v — 2 hourly

Adult · Ophthalmic
1 %w/w — 6 hourly
Frequency may be increased to 8 times if needed.

Adult · Otic
5 to 10 % — 6 hourly
1-2 drops.

Adult · PO,IV
50 to 100 mg/kg — 6 hourly
Maximum dose: 4 g/day.

Child · Intra Venous
12.5 to 25 mg/kg — 6 hourly

Safety Alerts

Acute porphyria, history of previous hypersensitivity or toxicity with chloramphenicol, severe renal impairment

Important Warnings

Avoid repeated courses and prolonged treatment, reduce dose in hepatic and renal impairment, blood counts required before and periodically during treatment, monitor plasma-chloramphenicol concentrations in neonates, risk of serious and fatal blood dyscrasias
Chloramphenicol must not be used when less potentially dangerous agents are effective Associated with serious haematological side-effects when given systemically and should therefore be reserved for the treatment of life-threatening infections

Caps, Oral Susp, Dry Powder for Inj Store at room temperature. Protect from Sunlight. Cream, Syrup, Eye Ointment, Eye Drops, Ear Soln Store in a well closed container, at room temperature. Do not Freeze. Protect from Sunlight. Inj (reconstituted soln) Store at room temperature. Use within 24-48 hrs if kept at room temperature.
