Neostigmine (Methylsulphate),are the derivatives of Neostigmine. It is of Synthetic origin and belongs to Quaternary Ammonium. It belongs to Cholinesterase inhibitor pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Antidotes and Cholinergic Agonist pharmacological group. The Molecular Weight of Neostigmine is 223.30. It is weakly acidic drug, 4.98% solution of the drug is isotonic and Its pKa is 12.0.

How to Take It

Adult · IM
0.02 mg/ kg — As recommended.
For diagnosis of myasthenia gravis

Adult · IV, IM, SC
0.5 to 2.5 mg — As recommended.
Additional doses depend upon the patient response. Max. 10mg/day

15 mg — 4 hourly
Max. 375mg/day

Child · Intra Venous
50 to 0 ug/kg — As recommended.
To severe neuromuscular blockade.

200 to 0 mg/kg — 6 hourly
For Myasthenia grains.

Safety Alerts

You should not be treated with neostigmine if you are allergic to it, or if you have: a bladder obstruction or other urination problems
a blockage in your digestive tract (stomach or intestines)
or a serious disorder called peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane lining the organs inside your abdomen)
Tell your doctor if you have ever had: coronary artery disease (clogged arteries)
a heart rhythm disorder

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction : hivesdifficult breathingswelling of your facelipstongueor throat. Tell your caregivers right away if you have muscle weakness as you wake up from surgery. Common side effects of neostigmine may include: nauseavomitingor slow heartbeats. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
