Hyoscine (Butylbromide) also known as Butylscopalamine bromide. Hyoscine is the derivative of Hyoscine (Butylbromide). It is of Natural origin and belongs to Tropane Alkaloid. It belongs to Cholinergic muscarinic antagonist pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Gastrointestinal Anticholinergics/Antispasmodics pharmacological group. The Molecular Weight of Hyoscine (Butylbromide) is 440.40. Its pKa is 8.1.

How to Take It

Adult · PO

10 to 0 mg — 4 hourly

In Anti spasmodic condition

Adult · PO

0.4 mg — 4 hourly

for GI & Genitourinary conditions

Adult · Slow IV

5 to 0 mg/hr — As recommended.

Child · Intra Muscular

10 to 20 ug/kg — As recommended.

Single Dose

Child · Subcutaneous

10 to 20 ug/kg — As recommended.

Myasthenia gravis (but may be used to decrease muscarinic side-effects of anticholinesterases), paralytic ileus, pyloric stenosis, toxic megacolon, and prostatic enlargement

Important Warnings

Downs syndrome, in children and in the elderly, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, diarrhoea, ulcerative colitis, autonomic, neuropathy, acute myocardial infarction, hypertension, conditions characterized by tachycardia (including hyperthyroidism, cardiac insufficiency, cardiac surgery), pyrexia, and in individuals susceptible to angle-closure glaucoma

Side Effects

Transient bradycardia (followed by tachycardiapalpitation and arrhythmias)reduced bronchial secretionsurinary urgency and retentiondilatation of the pupils with loss of accommodationphoto-phobiadry mouthflushing and dryness of the skin. Side-effects that occur occasionally include confusion (particularly in the elderly)constipationnauseavomitingand giddiness. Very rare!angle-closure glaucoma may occur.
